Prepare: Journalists must constantly consider what is news and how it should be presented to the public. While there is a lot that goes on that is important, the journalist must be cognizant enough to choose the information for the audience for which they are writing and to know how important it is for the audience to know. To do this, journalists must be engulfed in various media and events, constantly gathering information for possible news stories.
Reflect: Consider the issues that are vital to your local community that you believe deserve expanded news coverage. This type of story is longer than the normal news story and may have different parts to it. Then, choose the top issue that you have decided to cover in your Special Report in Week 5.
Write: Now that you have decided on the topic for your special report, write a 250- to 300-word blog that shares with your peers why the issue is important. View the Formatting Stories and Blogs document for assistance with formatting your blog.
Respond to Peers: After you have written your blog, read the blogs of your peers and post a comment to at least three other bloggers about their story ideas. Your comments should address them by name, be between 50 and 75 words in length, and must include your name at the end of each response.
Prepare: Our media systems today are quite different from how they were when journalism first began, and they will continue to evolve. The Missouri Group discusses the changes and nature of our news media and also talks about how it has continually emerged in Chapters 1, 2, and 3.
eflect: After reading Chapters 1, 2, and 3 in the textbook, choose one of the three topics to discuss, relating it to a specific news media organization and story that is currently in the news.
Presentation of News in Various Media
Choose at least two different news media and discuss how a current news event was covered in each.
Citizen Journalism
Discuss how citizen journalism played a part in a current news topic and provide two specific examples.
User Generated Content
Discuss how user-generated content altered the factual presentation of current news events in two instances.
Write: After choosing a topic to discuss and collecting your current news examples, write a 250-word post that addresses the area on which you reflected. In your initial post, you must include at least one in-text citation from the reading or viewing material for the week and you must also properly cite the examples that you used and provide links to them or upload them. At the end of your post, include your name and a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your post. All citations and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
