Staffing and Training a Fire Department to Meet a Growing Population in a Foreign Country
Population growth within fire departments response areas can affect the staffing of units to ensure adequate fire protection is on-call for the residents of a community. As the population grows, so does the required minimum amount of firefighters on duty, and equipment needs increases to maintain fire protection services. This concept of staffing personnel and equipment to meet the needs of the community is practiced worldwide. This module will provide students an insight on the manner in which fire departments in foreign countries provide fire protection to meet the needs of their population.
Objective
Identify how the minimum staffing requirements are made to meet the needs of the community. Describe the impact of cultural views in hiring practices.
Identify community influence in determining staffing needs in the fire service. Explain how budgetary concerns affects staffing needs of a growing community. Methodology

Topic of discussion:
After selecting your foreign city, and researching their fire department, how does your foreign city's fire department train their firefighters to meet the needs of the community they serve?
How is their training delivered, and what are the requirements to become a firefighter? In comparison to U.S. firefighters, is the training and requirements more or less demanding in your selected city?
Students will respond to instructor's post, and engage in an insightful response on the discussion topic. Students will also engage in active responses to other classmates. Students will be evaluated on their active participation in the discussion topic.
Readings:
Students will be required to read chapter 9 from the text. Additionally, students will select a foreign city, and research their fire service staffing needs to meet their population.
Assignments:
Students are required to select a foreign city, and discuss how a growing population plays a role in determining the staffing needs of their department. How does various population density within the city, determine the staffing needs of each area, and how are additional funds acquired when hiring additional resources and equipment. Minimum required length for this assignment is 3-4 pages. This assignment is weighted 10% of your total grade, and is open the entire semester.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on their in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject material, that displays critical thinking of the subject matter. Students will also be evaluated in their engagement and understanding of the discussion topic material. The rubric attached will be used to evaluate the students understanding for this module.
