Assignment: Contrast Bagley's Essentialism with Rugg's Social Reconstructionism. As a minimum be sure to address ideas related to the purposes of education, topics addressed in the curriculum, and the role of teachers for each.

TRIVIA NOTE: Bagley is considered one of the most conservative of the prominent educators of his era, while many people judge Rugg to be one of the most liberal. At the University of Illinois before moving to Teachers College (reportedly he was recruited to provide a bit of philosophical balance to the Dewey/Kilpatrick majority), Bagley's first doctoral student (ever) was Harold Rugg.

BONUS TRIVIA: My major professor at The University of Texas at Austin, O. L. Davis, Jr., studied under Harold Drummond at Peabody, who studied under Paul Hanna at Stanford, who studied under Harold Rugg at Teachers College. The line goes back to Wundt in Germany, who is credited with "creating" modern psychology as a field of inquiry.
