Case Study: Consider how the Myanmar government has used Durkheim's theories of anomie and moral regulation to justify the persecution of the Rohingya in terms of Durkheim and collective morality. By creating an atmosphere of anomie, or a lack of social standards and control, the government has been able to make a situation in which the Rohingya are perceived as outsiders who do not deserve the same rights as other citizens. As a result, the Rohingya are regarded as subhuman and unworthy of the same rights as other citizens, according to collective morality. It is also worth noting that the Rohingya crisis could be interpreted as a failure of collective morality. All members of a society with hemgeneous collective morality are expected to be treated equally and with respect. The Rohingya, on the other hand, have been relentlessly harassed and denied certain rights, demonstrating Myanmar's collective lack of morality and state of anomie.
