Decide on a topic related to diversity in engineering. This can be related to the workforce, college education system or K-12 (pre-college) education. You may wish to focus on representation of a particular group (gender, minority, majority), or approach the topic holistically.
Perform an on-line literature review to find the following (one of each is required, though you may include additional resources):

a) Data related to the topic,

b) A personal story, explanation of a program, or editorial type essay on the topic c) A reference providing a justification for having a diverse workforce

Your reference material can be research reports, tip sheets, videos, web pages, or any other source. You must use at least 3 sources for the assignment, though they may differ in detail and reliability.

Turn in the following for your assignment:

1) Provide a list of your three references, provided in proper citation format (any regularly
accepted format is acceptable.)

2) Provide an essay discussing the topic. Avoid providing opinions that are not backed up by the data or resources that you are referencing. The essay shall be one to three pages (typed, 1-1/2 spaced, 12 point Times-Roman font, standard 1inch margins). Address the following:

a. Brief overview of the topic and data
b. Possible causes for a specific piece of data you have found and whether the data are
acceptable or problematic. This information may be included in your references. If not, additional citations are allowed to back up your statements. Do not base general statements on opinion, but provide data to justify them (i.e. rather than saying that a group is more prepared than another cohort for engineering curriculum in college, provide data such as comparisons of average AP credits transferred in, number of science and math credits in high school, etc.) Be careful about over-stating the data, clarifying whether average or ranges of values are known, limitations of the study, etc.

c. Describe two specific actions that an engineer can take that can impact diversity in the workforce (positively or negatively), focusing on the topic you have chosen. One action should be an intentional decision, while the other should be unintentional. Include a statement of the expected impact of these actions. These are not expected to be provided in your references, but can be based on them.
