Instructions:
Students can review the suggested topics and references and decide the direction for their research project. The actual Research Project topic can deviate from those below according to the directions of the supervisor and the research needs of the student. Each student need to choose 3 topics and prioritise them according to their research profile. Then, the programme director will allocate students/topics to supervisors.
The Research Project process is as follows.
Meeting 1: the supervisor meets with the student to discuss the topic in detail, create a plan, discuss data and methodologies and set the agenda.
Meeting 2: the supervisor checks the student's progress. At this stage, the student is expected to have
collected most of the necessary data, do a number of computations and finish the literature review.
Meeting 3: the supervisor meets the student to finalise the details and discuss minor issues.
Topic 13. Banking competition and crisis: Equilibrium and competition in the banking sector
Research Objective
We see how models for the testing for banking competition have been proposed in the literature. More specifically, we discuss how to test for competition in the banking industry. We present issue related to sample splitting problem, and test for difference in mean across subsample is presented. Test for equilibrium is extensively discussed to show that different conclusions can come from different testing procedure. We also study banking crisis. Theory suggests that the effect of banking market concentration on financial stability is mediated by several competing variables. We build a unified empirical framework to test for the simultaneous presence and impact of the mediators through which concentration is expected to impact financial stability. The results indicate that the magnitude and net effect of the mediators depend upon the level of concentration.
