In this discussion we will try to place the current European war between Russia and Ukraine into some historical context. There is an excellent article that shows why Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, tries to use labels from the World War II era to smear the current Ukrainian leadership. The reality is that Putin is simply on a war of aggression to reclaim imperial Russian and Soviet glory, as the article points out. Nonetheless, we should realize that using these references to World War II still resonates with Europeans, including Russians and Ukrianians.

The question is why? The article also makes clear that history is always messy and convoluted, and notes that some Ukrainians did participate in the Nazi occupation of the Soviet Union and the Holocaust. How should that affect the way that we interpret the current conflict in Ukraine? Have you encountered other examples of the echoes of World War II in current political or cultural contexts?
