Assignment:
As we wrap up this discussion for the week, I wanted to make some summary comments about our discussion of counsellor worldview. We have discussed boundaries, the Big Five personality traits, stereotypes, and attitudes and biases we have. Kim, Ng, and Ahn (2005) discuss the importance of four factors critical to counseling and psychotherapy:
(a) client expectation for counseling services,
(b) a shared worldview,
(c) the therapeutic relationship, and
(d) rituals or interventions" (p. 67).
When a counselor shares a similar worldview with the client, it creates a collaborative framework for both client and clinician to work from. It has been suggested that when client and clinician have a shared worldview over the cause of problems, outcomes can increase. I believe it critical for us to assess our worldview and its benefits and challenges. Do you think having a similar worldview to the client could post any ethical or clinical challenges?
