By the end of this course, you will have looked at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You also will have examined different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue.

Discussion 1: Choose an ethical issue to write about. You may choose from the list below, or, with approval from the instructor, select a different socially relevant topic. It is recommended that you choose a topic that you are familiar with or that you have some interest in exploring further. For the purposes of this paper, your topic should pertain to a current area of interest in the news and/or government policy forums.

Choose one of the following topics for your paper:

1. Corporate contributions to political campaigns
2. Mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex
3. The role and responsible use of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
4. Corporate or government whistleblowing
5. Immigration reform in the US and/or abroad
6. Gender and/or LGBTQIA equality in the workplace
7. Gun violence and gun law reform
8. Climate change and individual responsibility
9. The legalization of recreational drugs
