Crime Scene Investigation
Scenario:
You are the lead investigator of the Torrancetown Police Department. It is 4:00 am. You have been called onto the scene of a commercial burglary at the Stop and Go Mart on Post Dr.
• The operator of a white pick-up truck drove their vehicle into the store's front door.
• The door is glass with an aluminum frame. It broke immediately upon impact.
• The operator of the vehicle appears to have entered the store through the front door and stole 2 garbage bags full of cigarettes and lottery tickets.
• The operator of the vehicle left behind several cartons of cigarettes on the scene.
• There also appears to be a red substance, consistent with blood, on a section of the front door's broken glass.
The store is not alarmed and has no video cameras
While you are investigating, an officer calls that they have located an abandoned pickup truck in a nearby shopping mall parking lot. The damage to the vehicle is consistent with the damage to the burglary vehicle. The driver left the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
As the lead investigator, discuss what evidence you would collect to:
1. Confirm if the vehicle found is the same as the burglary vehicle.
2. Confirm the identity of the burglar.
3. Be specific as to where you would collect print/biological evidence and the methods you would utilize to collect it.
4. Explain the reasoning for each.
