Write a 400-500-word essay comparing and contrasting any two of the works read this week that you believe best represent the romantic literary period and the presentation of American values and ideals.

Assignment

As our nation developed, and as authors became more comfortable with presenting American values and concerns in their literature, so, too, did they create new styles and new forms to deliver their messages. Pre-19th century literature took form in narratives, sermons, chronicles, pamphlets, and diaries, as pointed out on the Perspectives in American Literature site, and promoted ideas of America as the "promised land" and Americans as the "chosen people." As authors continued to write in the early 19th century, the 18th century Age of Reason gave way to the romantic literary period. Literature produced during this period did take on new shapes, but made deliberate advances in content as well.

In this assignment you will write a 400-500-word essay comparing and contrasting any two of the works read this week that you believe best represent the romantic literary period and the presentation of American values and ideals. Begin by thinking back to your ideas from W2 Assignment 1. This essay may address the work from that assignment plus one more from the Week 2 reading list, or you may select two new works from the week's assigned reading. Consider similarities and differences in each author's presentation of the material and approach to the issues. It is best to discuss the same value or ideal across the two works. The comparison should include:

A clear identification of the particular American value.

A discussion of the ways in which each reading comports with the parameters of the romantic literary period.

A clear and thorough comparison and contrast that includes textual references and/or examples.

The essay should be 400-500 words, written in 3rd person, and should:

Contain an appropriate introduction, thesis statement, organized body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Be properly documented and formatted in MLA style.

Include a proper Works Cited page.
