Assignment - Industry-Based Project
INTRODUCTION - The project enables students to develop a practical understanding of their particular field of study as it applies to a work environment. Students are expected to propose solutions to a problem relating to the hospitality industry. The research project must contain some elements that are innovative, experimental, or exploratory in nature. An academic staff will supervise the progress of the project, provide guidance and direction where appropriate, and evaluate the final report and its presentation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES - On successful completion of this Module, the student will be able to:
Learning outcome 1: Undertake an in-depth study on a specific topic of interest within the hospitality/tourism industry.
Learning outcome 2: Gain research experience, thereby understanding the challenges and processes in the hospitality and tourism industry.
Learning outcome 3: Apply classroom concepts to industry settings thus enabling students to gain a better understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry.
ASSESSMENT - The assessment for this module is as follows:
1. Industry-Based Project Proposal
2. Industry-Based Project Report
Assessment Description - The student will be assigned an individual school supervisor for a period of three (3) months. At the beginning of the supervision, the student is expected to choose a topic for research for his or her industry-based project. This must come in the form of a project proposal.
The official meetings with the school supervisor are generally known as Project Consultations. Attendance in arranged consultations is important, and a minimum four 30- minute sessions are mandatory. The purpose of these consultation sessions is to guide and provide feedback to the students on their project report progress. For instance, project supervisor may suggest alternative methods of data gathering, analysis or focus if students are not clear. See Appendix A for the Project Consultation Meeting Record Sheet.
A list of topics for consideration for the project is provided below:
- Hosting an event in a tourist destination
- Market research of hospitality / tourism markets (e.g. Singapore or other tourism- based nations)
- Niche tourism marketing
- Start-up of travel / hospitality promotions (Bed & Breakfast, organising Seasonal Tours, running a family-owned hotel business, managing a foodservice organisation etc.)
- Sustainable tourism
1. Industry-Based Project Proposal (800 to 1000 words)
At the start of the semester, a project proposal form is to be submitted by the student.
The Project Proposal will be based on the following categories:
- Introduction
- Aims and Objectives
- Review of Key Literature
- Research Methodology
- Research Plan
- References
2. Industry-Based Project Report (5,000 words)
At the end of semester, the final report is to be submitted by the students.
The Project Report will be based on the following categories:
- Research Background
- Review of Key Literature
- Research Methodology
- Analysis and Findings
- Conclusions and Recommendations
- References
