Assignment - Industry-Based Project

INTRODUCTION - The project enables students to develop a practical understanding of their particular field of study as it applies to a work environment. Students are expected to propose solutions to a problem relating to the hospitality industry. The research project must contain some elements that are innovative, experimental, or exploratory in nature. An academic staff will supervise the progress of the project, provide guidance and direction where appropriate, and evaluate the final report and its presentation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES - On successful completion of this Module, the student will be able to:

Learning outcome 1: Undertake an in-depth study on a specific topic of interest within the hospitality/tourism industry.

Learning outcome 2: Gain research experience, thereby understanding the challenges and processes in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Learning outcome 3: Apply classroom concepts to industry settings thus enabling students to gain a better understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry.

ASSESSMENT - The assessment for this module is as follows:

1. Industry-Based Project Proposal

2. Industry-Based Project Report

Assessment Description - The student will be assigned an individual school supervisor for a period of three (3) months. At the beginning of the supervision, the student is expected to choose a topic for research for his or her industry-based project. This must come in the form of a project proposal.

The official meetings with the school supervisor are generally known as Project Consultations. Attendance in arranged consultations is important, and a minimum four 30- minute sessions are mandatory. The purpose of these consultation sessions is to guide and provide feedback to the students on their project report progress. For instance, project supervisor may suggest alternative methods of data gathering, analysis or focus if students are not clear. See Appendix A for the Project Consultation Meeting Record Sheet.

A list of topics for consideration for the project is provided below:

  • Hosting an event in a tourist destination
  • Market research of hospitality / tourism markets (e.g. Singapore or other tourism- based nations)
  • Niche tourism marketing
  • Start-up of travel / hospitality promotions (Bed & Breakfast, organising Seasonal Tours, running a family-owned hotel business, managing a foodservice organisation etc.)
  • Sustainable tourism

1. Industry-Based Project Proposal (800 to 1000 words)

At the start of the semester, a project proposal form is to be submitted by the student.

The Project Proposal will be based on the following categories:

  • Introduction
  • Aims and Objectives
  • Review of Key Literature
  • Research Methodology
  • Research Plan
  • References

2. Industry-Based Project Report (5,000 words)

At the end of semester, the final report is to be submitted by the students.

The Project Report will be based on the following categories:

  • Research Background
  • Review of Key Literature
  • Research Methodology
  • Analysis and Findings
  • Conclusions and Recommendations
  • References

Word Count: 6000 - Industry-Based Project Proposal (800 to 1000 words) and Industry-Based Project Report (5,000 words). The report should be type-written on A4 size paper with double spacing and font size of 12. Leave a clear space of 2.5cm all round. The report should be 5,000 words (excluding tables and appendices). The report should be properly secured.

FORMAT - The recommended format is as follows: Cover page (Appendix C). Preface, containing background information of company such as nature of business, organisational structure, processes involved and others. Main Body, consisting of introduction, problem identification, objectives, collection of data, analysis of data, evaluation of proposed solution, selection and implementation of the proposed solution and conclusion. Appendices, containing relevant information but too lengthy to be included into the main body, e.g. sample tour itinerary and annual reports.

PROJECT SUBMISSION - All students MUST submit their individual final report on or before the deadline given by the Academy, failing which the student shall be considered as having failed the project. The ‘Project Consultation Meeting Record Sheet' MUST be duly signed and submitted together with the final report. The final version of the ‘Individual Project Proposal Form' MUST be duly signed and submitted with the final report. The final report shall be submitted through the approved learning management system. As the final report will not be returned to the students, students are advised to make a duplicate copy of the report for their own reference before submission.

There shall be only one submission of the final report. After submission, any requests to re-work or re-submit will not be acceded to. There shall be no extension of deadline except for the following reasons: Sick leave of 5 continuous days or more; Reservist training of 5 continuous days or more; Overseas assignments of 5 continuous days or more. Appeal for extension of deadline with the above valid reasons must be submitted to the Academy seven (7) days before the deadline. Students can do so by filling in the Request for Extension of Industry-based Project Deadline form (Appendix D) and submit together with the documentary proofs to the Programme Executive. A fourteen (14) day grace will be granted to students with valid reasons as stated in 3.3.2.7. No further extension, whatsoever, will be granted. If student who has been granted the extended deadline failed to submit by the new deadline, the student shall be considered as having failed the project. All students who failed the project will have to re-enrol, subject to the rules and regulations of the Academy.
