Question

Discuss Becker's labeling theory and Goffman's stigma/total institutions. According totext, labeling theory doesn't fully explain the origin of crime and deviance. It does, however, hold credibility in explaining the propensity for a "criminal" to continue committing crimes and driving the rates of recidivism. For example, what happens when a person has been labeled "deviant" or "criminal" after "paying their dues" to society? Erving Goffman, on the other hand, was concerned with the management of a spoiled identity, stigma and total institutions. For example, how is a criminal expected to reform when his/her whole identity has been entirely stripped in the reformation process? Overall, how do these theories play a role, historically and currently, in mass incarceration and criminality as you see it right now? Give me examples. How do these two theories work together in explaining crime and deviance? In your opinion, do the theories get it right?
