Question - Families Solution Discussion
Description - Families provide a majority of care for older adults, but they are often poorly prepared to add an older adult to their household. Create a BLOG entry that educates families on how to prepare for an older adult becoming a new member of the household. Begin the blog by reflecting on the main thing that would bother you about sharing your home with a parent or grandparent on a long-term basis. Share your family structure and what accommodations or changes would need to be made for a parent or grandparent to live with you full-time.
Then discuss at three family structures that are different from yours and how those structures may impact the process of adding an older adult to the household.
Finally, end the Blog with a section that provides an overview of the issues that ALL families would need to consider (Tip: See box 34.4 in Touhy & Jett CH 34, p.457): Questions to ask, Modifications that may need to be made; Potential areas of conflict; and, Ways to decrease areas of conflict. Make this part of the blog 'come alive' with specific strategies for the recommendations in the text. For example, the authors recommend "Respect privacy" as a way to decrease areas of conflict. Implementing this suggestion might include a lock on the older person's bedroom door or bathroom (if more than one person in the household uses it); or, a family rule that if the older person has a visitor of the opposite sex, that a 'Do not disturb' sign could be hung on the door when they wish to be undisturbed. You are also encouraged to use pictures or other websites that may offer help in one of the areas. Finally, include the websites or contact information of local services and resources that can facilitate this transition.
The Patient Education Blog Entry #2 should be a minimum of 500 words, written at a level easily understood by lay-people (typically the 8th grade reading level); and, must be supported by two current (within the last 5 years), peer-reviewed journal articles, and also integrates at least two of the following: textbook readings, videos, pictures, graphs, other blogs, websites, or policy sources related to the topic/issue. (e.g. legal rights of older adults living in another adult's home/apt, the use of contracts, living wills, ways to recognize elder abuse- especially the microaggressions associated with elder abuse etc.).
