Compose a summary of the Home theme, as discussed in James Wood's article, and apply it to the stories "Ghosts" by Ana Menendez and "Absence" by Daniel Alarcon.

Wood talks about a complicated attitude toward home that immigrants or migrants often experience: "to be in between two places, to be at home in neither, is the inevitable fallen state, almost as natural as being home in one place."

In an era where it has become increasingly easy to move from one place to another-from the suburbs to the city or across the globe-discuss the theme of leaving home in the two stories.

Here are some questions to consider.

What memories or things (i.e. places, languages) from the past connect these characters to a sense of home?
What memories of a place (not just a house) symbolize the loss of home for the various characters?
How do the characters try to create a sense of home in their new contexts? Otherwise, how do they constantly negotiate between homes?
