Discussion: Applying the Sociological Imagination
Purpose: In this discussion, students will be applying the first and most important concept in Sociology, that of the sociological imagination.
The activity will get students to identify items and put them in context in the society which created it. This is thinking sociologically, or the sociological imagination.
Part 1 (Prompt) C. Wright Mills said the sociological imagination means we look at our world like an outsider- as though it doesn't already make sense to us. For your initial post, you will examine the following objects and explain why they exist in our society:
- high heels
- bottled water
- earbuds or headphones
- artificial flowers or plants
In your explanation, answer the following:
- What does this product tell us about the society that uses it?
- What does the design of the item or its packaging tell you about what is meaningful to the people who use it?
