Nancy Weiss argues that Af-Ams became Democrats because of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal Programs. Her claim, essentially, is that Af-Ams switched their political allegiance from the Republican party because the Works Progress Administration was a vital part of the New Deal. It provided some of them with jobs and income. Paul Frymer argues that such a move has resulted in Af-Ams being captured, rendered invisible and ignored by the Democratic party. He traces this phenomenon to Martin Van Buren's development of the Democratic Party. Van Buren rendered Af-Ams invisible because the fate of the republic in the 1840's was more important than the interests of Af-Ams.
