Assignment - Encounter and Girl OR First Born and My First Son

Description - Choose ONE discussion topic:

Topic 1 - "Encounter" by Nella Larsen and "Girl" are two very different fictional narratives. In fact, "Girl" may not be a story at all, but it is fiction. Both texts show the restrictions women faced, particularly women of color. Both texts are about "social codes" that dictate the behavior of women of color. Discuss and COMPARE the TWO readings and demonstrate why this is so. Give examples from the texts to explain your opinion. Write one paragraph of ten sentences or more, then respond to two other students. And let's rewrite the definition of "slut."

The concept of the slut really means this: it's a woman who controls and distributes her own sexuality as she sees fit. That removes the negative double-standard that plagues this word.

Topic 2 - "Of the Passing of the First Born" by W.E.B. Du Bois and "On My First Son" by Ben Johnson share a very similar event. Explain how this event is made "literary" by each author. Hint: use of literary terms such as symbolism, imagery, tone, etc. are the key. COMPARE the two events and how each author expresses his ideas in the writing. Give examples from the texts to explain your opinion. What is the difference that DuBois' race plays as an essential difference from the poem? Write one paragraph of ten sentences or more, then respond to two other students.
