An evaporative cooling system is necessary for power plants in water short areas. The cooling tower evaporates 3 percent of the inflow water and scaling (mineral precipitation) problems are avoided if the total dissolved solids (TDS) is kept at or below 2000 g/m3 everywhere. Salts are removed from the plant as blowdown liquid. Makeup water has a TDS of 1000 g/m3. For a heated water flow rate of 10 m3/s, what makeup water flow rate and blowdown flow rate are needed for steady state operation?
