The Intern is a movie about a 70-year old retiree who becomes an intern at an online organisation which typically employs Millennials. Despite standing out as an employee due to his age, formal style of dressing and behaving, and not being IT-savvy, Ben is ultimately successful in his role as an intern with the organisation's founder, Julie. This movie addresses age stereotypes in the workplace which hinder older employees from participating fully in the workforce and organisations from enjoying the benefits of its experienced older employees.
Put yourself in a role of a consultant, and write a report on the following:
Introduction: Discuss ageism in the workplace, its causes and consequences for the older employees and employers. You are expected to draw your arguments from the academic literature on this topic.
Based on the work-effort motivation cycle (Wood et al., 2019, p. 87), identify and discuss ageism as an organisational constraint that Ben encountered in his role as an intern and how he responded to it. An important concept here is self-efficacy defined as a personal resource that helps people deal with adversity (Chiesa et al., 2019).
Analyse and evaluate Ben's motivation using Vroom's expectancy theory (Wood et al., 2019, pp. 101-104). What is Ben's expectancy, instrumentality and valence? Explain how the chosen theory is/(not) relevant to Ben (strengths and limitations of a theory depend on the context where it is being applied).
Based on your analysis and what was observed in the movie, explain any three relevant motivators that motivate Ben. These can be extrinsic (Topic 4) and/or intrinsic motivators (Topic 5). How are these motivators different from those that motivate full-time employees?
Provide two recommendations: a) how organisations can break down sterotypes about older workers, and b) what strategies older workers can implement to break down these stereotypes.
Suggested OB theories/models for this assignment are powerful analysis tools when used correctly. Each OB concepts/model used in the report needs to be explained and discussed. You are encouraged to use tables and other visual tools for presenting information in the report. Please note that each table/figure needs to be labeled properly with the table number and descriptive title above the table.
The scenario presented in this assignment highlights a complex situation and there are no right or wrong answers. The quality of your findings will depend on the depth of the research your group conducts into these issues and the depth of your understanding of relevant OB theories/concepts.
