Recognizing advertising as a dominant, but skewed, socio-cultural storyteller this assignment asks you to conduct an in-depth, critical analysis of a 2023 American Super Bowl commercial.
Instructions
Think carefully when selecting your commercial; not all Super Bowl ads are "deep" enough to complete this assignment. Please also stick to consumer product/brand commercials-for the purposes of this assignment, avoid promos for film/tv (e.g., Disney, Paramount+, Peacock) and advocacy ads (e.g., Servant Foundation).

In a minimum 4-page paper, about the following: if we consider advertising to be a kind of socio-cultural storyteller, what story or stories do this commercial tell? How are these stories ideological, simplified or typified versions of reality, or simply problematic? What is going on in (American) society, politics, and culture that makes these stories resonate? What does this ad reveal about (American) culture?
Do not be concerned with assessing whether the commercial is in fact effective in getting people to buy the product. Your main concerns are the social, cultural, symbolic, and ideological storytelling dimensions. Consider all aspects of the ad, including setting, imagery, music, pacing, celebrities, dialogue, symbols, tone/feelings, representations, and social values.
You do not need to bring in any outside research, readings, or sources. I only want your original, intelligent analysis. As a result, you do not need any form of bibliography.
