Interview questions and directions for paper

Select a a leader (preferably a health leader) you know either in a professional or personal context.

You then should have conducted a 30-minute interview (either in person or by phone) with this leader focusing on their own experience of leadership.

Included in your discussion were the following topics:

o How they became a leader

o What they feel are the most competencies to develop in order to become a successful leader

o The theories, principles and models of leadership they follow

o Leaders they modeled themselves upon and why

o Major leadership challenges they have faced and how they overcame them

• This week, summarize the results in a written paper to be submitted to the instructor. Be sure to include what you learned about the practice of leadership from the interview. Compare and contrast what you learned with the content presented in the unit lecture.

• Paper should be 3 typed pages in length, double spaced

How they became a leader.

I've been in leadership positions most of my working life. In looking for ways to improve working conditions, customer satisfaction, increasing revenue.

I always looked at how things could be improved. Never took, "that's the way it is or we always did it that way". I believe that people doing the job can come up with how to do things better. I've always looked for the "how and why" in things. Leaders are not great because of what they know, they are good because they know how to bring out the great in others. That is my quote and not copied from anywhere!

What they feel are the competencies to develop in order to become a successful leader.

Education. Experience. You need both.

We are in the business to take care of people and it is both a humanitarian and business venture. Both for patients and those taking care of them.

The skill set includes clinical as well as the business side to ensure stability in the organization. Motivating people to do the right thing is very important.

The theories, principles and models of leadership they follow.

Take a look at the definition of theleadership styles I think I am. There are many different types and I think it is important to have a few different styles depending on the situation.

I have many mentors. Most of which have always led by example. Do the right thing, admit when wrong, look for improvement, praise and give credit where deserved, help everyone that you can. Be compassionate and understanding. Expect the best. Give it your all. Follow your heart!
