Part 1
Imagine that you are organizing an event for inner-city children as an inaugural fundraiser for your organization. Your goal is to feed 100 children and also raise money to offset the costs of the event and provide revenue for your organization. Your plan is to feed the children a dinner and entertain them while welcoming new donors to your organization.
You are the manager of the organization, and your staff consists of an accountant and an administrative assistant. Suffice to say, you feel overwhelmed with the task at hand, but are confident you can pull it off if you plan the event properly. Your hope is that invited guests will come to the event, pay for their tickets at the door, and make a financial donation during the event to offset costs for the children in attendance and provide surplus revenue after all your costs are accounted for. Fortunately, sponsors are donating all of your event-related costs except for food costs. For food, you may choose to hire a caterer or have your spouse cater. (Your spouse does not run an official catering business, but has offered to cater at a rate less than that of an official caterer.)
In order to plan the actual event, you will need to establish certain policies for your organization. Read chapter from Brinckerhoff (2009) (see reference below in Part 2). Referring to the list of eight possible types of policies below, choose three types and write up one policy for each:
- Conflict-of-interest policies
- Financial controls
- Personnel policies
- Media policies
- Volunteer policies
- Quality assurance policies - Program policies
- Disaster policies
Choose areas that are most relevant for the upcoming event and that will support the decisions you need to make for that event.
Make a 2-page write-up of the three policies (including the actual policy statements) that explains why each policy is important for the planning of this event. Include at least one citation of a journal article to support your reasoning.
Part 2
Interview an executive director (or a senior-level manager) and discuss what policy issues her or his organization currently faces and what policy issues are anticipated in the next 3-5 years. Try to learn more about the organization's policy development process and compare that to the process outlined in Brinckerhoff (2009). Summarize your interview findings in a 2 pge paper.
