HCM trends

Lindsay,

These new trends in Human Resource Management (HRM) and Human Capital Management (HCM) are very encouraging for me! I personally haven't experienced many of these new trends in my employment over the past 10 years.

About 6 months ago I started consulting for multiple companies and have found that omnipresent technology has allowed me to work from home for most of my consulting jobs. I have the flexibility to manage multiple projects for multiple clients from the comfort of wherever I have my laptop and Wi-Fi. I can get more work done in a day since I am not having to drive and commute to an office.

Plus, I have the flexibility to have a better work/life balance. As a wife and mother of two school aged kids, it's great that I'm able to hop over to their school quickly when needed or throw together something for dinner in the afternoon or be home when a repair guy is coming over.

Before I started consulting earlier this year, I worked at the same company for 10 years in a traditional office environment. This company did not value or practice HCM at all and the company lacked any kind of culture. The video mentioned that more and more companies are recognizing culture as asset and I couldn't agree more.

At my last job there was no company identity or values so the result was poor employee performance, high turnover and poor company branding. It made it impossible to recruit quality talent, so we were in a never-ending cycle of recruiting, training, performance reviews and terminations.

Because the quality and talented people wouldn't consider working there, the people that we could hire didn't have the skills we needed and if they weren't able to learn them quickly when they were hired, then they were gone rather quickly either on their own or through getting terminated.

I feel like their business model is very "old school" and no longer relevant in today's world. I did well there only because of my ability to learn new things and then apply and execute quickly.
