Chromosomal and genetic influences human growth and development from our eyesight to how our bodies will develop. There are issues of health, intellect and quality of life that are tied to genetics (Berger, 2013). Each of a person's genes creates a map for the person as to who they are and who they will become. Therefore, it can be seen why there are so many researchers on the side of nature in the great nature vs. nurture debate. It would seem that the more we come understand genetics the more that science grows it's argument that human development is based upon nature alone. Yes, genetics is foundational to human development but environment also shapes human growth. It must be seen that environment works with genetics and can even effect genetics to bring about human development (good and bad). A very recent development in genetics and environmental studies is showing how the two work together. Howard (2016) in a recent article reports that researchers have found how one's flu risk is linked to the year of their birth. Simply, the type of flu that is present at one's birth (environment) can imprint upon one's genetic structure (nature) and help fight off that flu in the future. If this research pans out then it clearly shows how environment can change one's genetic structure in a very positive way. And if this research is fully replicated then it shows how genetics and environment can produce a greater environment for a person in the future. Thus, we are reminded that both genetics and environment are important for the development of humanity. Berger, K. S. (2013). Invitation to the life span (2nd ed.). New York: Worth Publishers.
