You are catching up with friends and discussing all of the interesting things you learnt about the lymphatic system in Human Systems Physiology 2. You realise that each of you have experienced swelling in your legs for different reasons, and you suspect that the lymphatic system may be involved. In the following examples, try to explain why you think swelling may have occurred
1. On your travels overseas, you recall that on one of your long-haul flights you ended up with swelling in your calves and feet so bad that walking was difficult for the first few hours after landing. You remember that you didn't really get up out of your seat during the 12-hour flight. Discuss how lymph is transported and explain how the lack movement during the flight may have affected your lymphatic circulation and drainage.
2. When your friend Jasmine was pregnant, she experienced bad swelling of her feet and legs particularly in the last few months of pregnancy. During pregnancy, blood volume can increase by up to 50%. Discuss why you think pregnancy might lead to changes in lymphatic circulation or drainage?
3. Your friend, Max, has had to manage lymphedema after multiple surgeries on his foot. His surgeon explained that this is sometimes a complication of the type of soft-tissue surgery Max had. What structural aspects of lymphatic system may have been damaged during the surgery, and how would this affect lymphatic drainage?
