Assignment:

We will be considering much of what we have already learned about intercultural communication, along with some of your own personal cultural traits and expectations.

Your presentation should consist of the following:

Reflection on Intercultural Communication (3 slides)

• First, complete Quikchoice 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, and 10.1 in your textbook. Next, take the survey Public and Private Self. Report on your findings (results showed I am collectivist, both direct-low context and indirect-high context style, have a compromising conflict style, and prefer private self disclosure over public self disclosure regarding money, personality traits and family matters) providing definitions. What stands out to you? (1 slide)
• Based on your responses to the Quikchoices and survey, categorize your intercultural strengths based on what you believe will be most helpful to you in the future. You may choose to write this out in bullet points or in a visual representation such as a chart. (1 slide minimum).
• Discuss theories/topics that are relevant to you as you continue your education ( e.g., ethnocentrism, cross-ethnic conflict communication styles). Cite at least 1 specific concept that you believe will be most helpful to you. (1 slide minimum).

Your Creation: Subculture (3 slides).

• Design a subculture (e.g. hispanic immigrants from southamerica) that is geographically-bound but is linked by more specific commonalities than the larger culture. This subculture may be part of any nationality. To do so:
• In bullet points, list the characteristics that make this subculture distinct from the larger culture. Include at least 3 concepts related to intercultural conflict from our Week 5 materials. Be sure to cite the concepts (1 slide minimum).
• Select at least 4 concepts from everything we have learned thus far that further describe your subculture (2 slides minimum).
• You may divide them however you see fit into your remaining slides; cite the concepts.
• Here are some things we have learned thus far - in week 2, we covered cultural value patterns and cultural/ethnic identities; in week 3, we covered language and verbal and nonverbal codes; we covered the role of power in cultural identity development.
