What are notable issues on gender-role development in society today and how are we as a family and society reacting? The development of gender roles is changing quickly, although problems still exist. Today's notable challenges include dispelling gender stereotypes, bringing non-binary and transgender identities to the forefront, and continuing the discussion about gender expectations in relation to parenthood, professional choices, and emotional expression (Perry et al., 2019). Policies in schools and workplaces that identify and accommodate non-binary and transgender individuals are changing to match society's growing acceptance of varied gender identities (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020). More and more families are letting their children express their gender in more fluid ways and encouraging them to pursue hobbies outside of conventional gender roles. Nonetheless, there are still those parts of society who oppose gender-neutral restrooms, dress regulations, and the way gender identification is taught in schools.
