Personal Opinion Regarding the Issue

I believe that Canada's prison system should be reformed to prioritize rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "The time is always right to do what is right," and it is the right of each individual who has been incarcerated to have an opportunity to gain the skills needed to become a productive member of society (King, 2022). We must move away from the punitive approach of the past and focus on reparative justice and the social reintegration of inmates. This is the only way to ensure that individuals released from prison can become productive citizens and positively impact their communities. Nelson Mandela once said that, "it is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones." (Cordero, 2021) Therefore, Canada must treat those in its prisons with dignity and respect and with the understanding that they are human beings who deserve a second chance. We must focus on rehabilitation and reintegration, rather than punishment, to create a criminal justice system that works for everyone.
