Let's revisit the example you shared in our first discussion about an ethical dilemma or situation that you've faced. Describe this example and present your reasoning for your response using the ethical principles and theories that we've learned in the course. How did you respond differently? How did you respond similarly?
1. An example of an ethical dilemma I have encountered in a healthcare setting was when I was a nursing student doing my clinical rotation. I was assigned to a patient in the end stage of her cancer, and the family requested that no aggressive measures be taken. The hospital staff wanted to take more aggressive measures to save the patient, believing there was still a chance to delay the death process. I persuaded the hospital staff to honor the patient's wishes and not take aggressive measures. This allowed the patient to pass away peacefully, following their wishes. The hospital staff was initially resistant to the idea, but I explained to them why it was important to respect the patient's wishes and how it was in the patient's best interest.
2. Did your personal values play a role in resolving this ethical dilemma? Why or why not? My personal values of compassion and respect for autonomy played a role in resolving this ethical dilemma. I believed that the patient deserved to have their request respected and that providing them with the best possible quality of life at the end of their life was important. I persuaded the healthcare staff to honor the patient's wishes and not take aggressive measures. This allowed the patient to pass away peacefully, following her wishes.
