In the lesson titled American Democracy: Founding Principles, you read excerpts from a book by the French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville, who visited the United States in 1835 and then wrote a book about American democracy. De Tocqueville believed that equality was the great political and social idea of his time, and he admired American individualism. However, he expressed many other opinions about the United States, and American culture, that were not so favorable.

You responded to one of de Tocqueville's quotes, in particular:
