Assignment:
Secretary James Mattis, retired four-star Marine general, was US Secretary of Defense from January 20, 2017 to December 31, 2018. Previously, he had commanded at the highest levels of the US military, including US Central Command and US Joint Forces Command. He commanded Marines in the Persian Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. He was the 26th Secretary of Defense, and he resigned over policy differences with President Trump.
Over the years he picked up some interesting monikers. He is called "Mad Dog" Mattis because of his habit of making statements like, "Have a plan to kill everybody you meet." Although, he says he prefers the name "Chaos." He is known as an intellectual and voracious reader and as a result picked up the nickname "Warrior Monk."
In this interview at the Hoover Institute, while still Secretary, Mattis discussed a wide range of issues facing the United States military at home and around the world.
