Assignment:
1. Discuss a viable approach for a state border and immigration policy, when the U.S. form of governance makes for inevitable internal conflicts since states have different perspectives on safety and the provision of services from those of the federal government, and the President has little power to address internal state issues.
2. Kettl (2013) stated that "Homeland security is fundamentally different from most government programs because there is zero-tolerance for mistakes"( p. 99). Is this a fair and/or reasonable assessment? Is this still the case given the evolution of the mission space?
3. The American Psychological Association summarized a great deal of research dealing with the psychological and physical effects of stress here. Using this article as a starting point, summarize the main physiological and psychological consequences of traumatic stress experiences, and then discuss which factors you believe to be more important in which scenarios of disaster-triggered stress.
4. Based on the articles by Ehrkamp and by Hopkins et al. and the lesson content from this week, where do you see convergences between identity, space or place, and threat? Provide a personal example of when you have experienced the convergence between identity, space or place, and threat.
