Assignment:

In his book, Neither Settler nor Native, Mahmoud Mamdani argues that the modern nation state was born in and through two developments in Iberia in 1492:

"One was ethnic cleansing, whereby the Castilian monarchy sought to homogeneous national homeland for Christian Spaniards by ejecting and converting those among them who were strangers to the nation- Moors and Jews".

"The other development was the taking of overseas colonies in the Americas by the same Castilian monarchy that spearheaded ethnic cleansing".

  1. To what extent, Mamdani's argument is relevant to the historical formation of Canada as a nation-state?
  2. Based on your answer to the first question, elaborate on whether Canada can be considered as a 'settler-colonial' state? Make sure to clearly define what you mean by a settler-colonial state. You may use the course textbook, your lecture notes, and other academic resources to conceptualize the settler-colonial state.
