Topic: The Government and Public Policy
Dive deeper into the government side of public policy. In short, you will explore what different levels of government (local, state, and federal) do to enact and enforce public policy. Before you begin the discussion, making you know how our federal democracy works. Explore the various branches of government and how different levels of government (local, state, and federal) operate. Then reflect on the policy/societal issues that you are interested in (past or present). Research the various policies in place (past and present) that exist at each level of government and determine who is responsible for enforcing the policy and how. For example, if you are interested in air pollution you might research the Clean Air Act (federal law) that is enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency as well as many state or local laws/statutes that are overseen by state- or local-level agencies. In short, you will be exploring who does what according to what policy to improve a societal issue of interest.
