Homework: Article Critique
Overview
*For your article critique homework, you will have to choose an empirical article reporting original findings that researchers have discovered. Do not choose any review articles, book chapters, or magazine articles. Also, the key is to evaluate each component of the paper (so I would expect 1) a brief summary, 2) an evaluation of the research questions, methods, results, and discussion/implications, and 3) an overall verdict). Typically, you should discuss a lot about the method section evaluating different types of validity: internal validity (can you make a causal claim?), external validity (can you generalize the findings?), and construct validity (are the measures used adequate?)
Description: This homework requires you to critique a piece of published empirical literature in developmental psychology.
Purpose: Since peer-reviewed empirical research is the backbone of developmental psychology, you as a graduate student must become familiar with how to evaluate such research, so that they can consume and disseminate the research appropriately. This homework will allow you to practice critiquing empirical research.
