Ockham's Razor is a general principle of reasoning applicable in a wide range of experience. The principle is that on the whole, the simplest explanation that will do the job is likely to be correct. This assignment comes out of my current research on religion and art history, and illustrates that Ockham's razor is a useful guide to reasoning in any field.

Read Dr. McCree's power-point, "What Mound of Menice is This?" The power-point discusses a Freudian reading of Thomas Cole's landscape art. For those unfamiliar with Freud, the Oedipus complex is the idea that the young child cleaves to his mother, and is erotically attached to the mother, and feels rivalry to the father. According to Freud, all humans have these feelings, but the longings are taboo, and thus cause anxiety. You have to find away to go around this unspeakable desire and channel it in another direction. Several Thomas Cole paintings have a dark Appalachian mound/mountain. In a Freudian reading this represented taboo longing for the mother (It's a mother mound, "obviously").
