In this chapter you'll discover some of the concerns international business managers have to deal with in terms of what is legal & illegal; and what ethical & unethical business practices in foreign countries. You'll be introduced to the concerns of human rights practices, employment hiring & firing practices, environmental pollution in foreign countries, and in particular the issue of foreign corrupt business practices. What may be corrupt in one country; may be acceptable practice in another (i.e. bribes, and copyright infringement among others). You'll learn about the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (US law) and the Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions. If you have yet to learn in other courses; for all you economic philosophers out there, you'll discover David Hume, Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, and the Friedman Doctrine and his approach as the responsibility of businesses regarding business and ethics. Some of you may agree or disagree. More and more businesses both US and foreign are incorporating codes of ethics in their web sites, annual reports, and public relations literature. See: www.johnsonjohnson.com or (www.jnj.com), click on Our Company, and click on Our Credo for what they refer to as a moral compass. Question: Should US companies adopt the business ethics practice of "when in Rome; do as the Romans do" ?
