A discourse community is a collection of individuals who communicate about common values and underlying assumptions using the same discourses as a common language. I participate in many conversation communities. The academic community, of which I am a member, is the one that I am most a part of and that most influence me. My ideals, presumptions, and the way I talk about them have all been formed by this group. The pursuit of information, rational reasoning and critical thinking are highly valued in the academic world. The way academics interact with one another demonstrates these ideals. They are also clear in the way I interact with the other people in this community.
The way academics interact with one another is clear evidence of reasoned debate and the quest of knowledge. Evidence and logic are stressed in academic discourse. They substantiate their statements with facts, and they build their arguments using logic. Critical thinking is also highly valued in the academic world. This is clear from how academics assess the strength of their arguments and supporting data. They continually challenge and assess the assertions made by others. Additionally, they are examining and challenging their own presumptions and views.
My beliefs and presumptions have been formed by the academic community. I have been impacted by the community's ideals. I respect critical thinking, persuasive argumentation, and the search for truth. I also recognize the significance of logic and evidence. The academic environment has also influenced my communication style. I've mastered the art of speaking in a manner that emphasizes facts and logic. I've also developed the ability to analyze and assess the assertions that others make.
The academic setting has had a good impact on me. My beliefs and ideals have changed as a result. It has also influenced the way I speak. I've come to respect logical reasoning, critical thinking, and the quest for information. I've also improved my ability to express myself rationally and with proof. The academic world is not without flaws. There are certain beliefs and presumptions with which I disagree. Additionally, there are certain communication techniques that I think are ineffective. The academic world has, however, generally had a favorable impact on me.
