Discipline Instructions
Disciplining employees in a company is a function that every supervisor, at some point in his career, will have to perform. The study material in this module presents the most common types of disciplinary problems and how to deal with them.
1. Carefully read the 4 scenarios below and assess how you, as the supervisor, would discipline the protagonists in each story.
Case 1
Rosa is an accountant who has had absenteeism problems for the past 6 months. Although some reasons appear to be valid, such as the illness of her son, on other occasions, there is no just reason for her absence. This has caused a backlog of work in her area and the supervisor thinks it is time to take some action.
Case 2
Ismael has proven to be a good worker, but with a very poor attitude towards his co-workers. On one occasion, his bad temper caused an argument with his immediate supervisor, for which he was verbally reprimanded by the Human Resources director. Yesterday, as a supervisor, it was brought to your attention that Ismael had another altercation, but this time with a co-worker.
Case 3
As a supervisor, you have asked an employee to prepare a presentation, including an oral part and another part using the Power Point tool. Upon handing him the presentation, you notice that the presentation was copied in its entirety from another presentation on the Internet, and that all the employee did was substitute his own name for the real author. You are undecided about how to act in this situation, because you do not have time to prepare a new one, but you do not want to overlook that act of dishonesty either.
Case 4
Arturo is an employee who belongs to the main union of workers of the company in which you are a supervisor. On past occasions, Arturo has been disciplined for interrupting or abandoning his work to promote the causes of the union. His file already has three written reprimands, which doesn't seem to matter to him. Today he has left his work again, despite the fact that you have told him not to.
2. Using a word processor, he writes what the employee's fault consists of. Is the action justified? Remember that you must refer to what you have learned, as well as elaborate on your answer.
3. Specifically indicate the disciplinary action, if any, that you would recommend in each case. Remember that you are the supervisor in every situation.
4. Write, in at least two paragraphs of 5 to 6 sentences each, a strategic plan that as a supervisor you would put in place so that these faults do not happen again.
