Over the last few years, the executive team had selected a large number of projects all relating to digital development of our banking channels, such project like a new mobile application or a redesign of our current online banking platform. In result, they promoted one of our project managers to a program managers, leading the management of all those digital projects. The program manager primary focus should be the interdependencies of the projects to reduce the risk that comes with activating related projects. It is also a lot easier to justify resources to be allocated to entire program- as the program manager will have a some team members dedicated to only digital projects. My employer also recently hired a portfolio manager to ensure the program and all other projects align with the overall company's strategic goal. The portfolio manager manages the projects but does not really manage the program or project managers. Aside from assisting the executive team in project selection, the portfolio managers focus is on improving the project management process.
