DESIGN SKILLS - BRIEF: DIGITAL FOLIO
This segment of the Design Skills 1 module prepares the future generation of designers for industry. This project aims to develop the student's general understanding and practical skills in digital media for design, communication and documentation, including basic CAD modelling (3D) and the digital and analogue presentation (2D) of a selected project. This includes techniques to generate design presentations that demonstrate a good use of design principles as well as to generate drawings for the communication process within the building industry.
Computer generated models and digital images are essential media for digital design, communication and documentation in the contemporary design practice. It is important for the future generation of designers to be able to design and communicate using a range of essential digital tools. The second assignment in Design Skills 1, students will:
• be introduced to the basics of digital design communication including Computer- aided Design (CAD) modelling and digital and analogue presentations;
• learn about the key principles for designing and generating 3D models and 2D drawings;
• exercise the practical skills in using Revit for basic CAD modelling, documentation and presentation, and Photoshop for optimising renderings and layout.
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
Part I: Modelling Project
Assignment 3 (Part One) requires students to: (1) select one of the provided designs, (2) model the selected design, and (3) produce working and design drawings using Revit only. The list of designs for selection will be available on Canvas in Week 26. The 3D model and analogue presentations should demonstrate various modelling principles and techniques introduced in the course. The submission items include:
A. Revit model:
• Original Revit file of the 3D model (submit the .rvt file)
• Any textures and materials that are not part of the default Revit libraries (include these in a separate folder).
B. Analogue Presentation - Working drawings:
• 1 location plan (1:1250);
• 1 site plan - showing context (1:500)
• 1 ground floor plan (1:100);
• 2 elevation (1:100);
• 1 section (1:100);
The above drawings should be appropriately arranged - (i.e. think of your layout!). The scale of your drawings will depend on your selected house design.
Part II: Digital Design and Project Layout
Assignment 3 (Part II) requires students to apply appropriate design techniques taught in the module workshops, and demonstrate the use of these techniques in enhancing the visual and communicative qualities of your digital and analogue presentations.
Students are asked to: (1) transfer their Part I Revit model into the visualization platform - Lumion, (2) digitally enhance and develop the Lumion model, (3) transfer their Lumion model into the raster graphic editor - Photoshop, and (4) edit their images and develop layout principles and techniques for improving the designs communication. The submission items include:
C. Lumion Model:
• Original Lumion file of the 3D model (submit the .spr file)
D. Photoshop File:
• Original Photoshop file (submit the .psd file)
E. Lumion Images:
• Four (4) minimum rendered images (1024 x 768 or 768 x 1024) of the 3D model including both interior and exterior views, saved in .jpeg (or .png) format.
F. Photoshop Images:
• Two (2) minimum edited Lumion images - both images should demonstrate the use of photomontage techniques.
