Since it is his book and he's doing the 'talking' do we believe that in terms of his marriage with Linda, that Karl lived with a wife who was very difficult early in their marriage, and then later went through a terrible period of mental illness, and that he did a very good job of being loving, patient and helpful to Linda the whole time, so that she could finally recover and be healthy and normal?

That Karl tries to present himself well, but the evidence is there that he was a hard man to be married to, and that he was not very sensitive or perceptive about the difficulties that Linda was going through, and he writes her in a way that makes Linda seem more unstable than she really is?
