Governing ourselves in a professional manner is imperative. As illustrated in the film, all actions have consequences, no matter how big or small, or whether our intentions are good or not. Baccalaureate prepared Registered Nurses must carefully balance what is known from health care research and literature with the concerns and context of those we serve. As RN BNs our actions must negotiate situations that do not always offer a desirable outcome, our behavior must be governed by ethics that are at times challenging to employ and our thinking must be based on evidence. And all this needs to be done in the ever-changing context of nursing practice. This is not easy.

Developing compassion and patience for our self as we adapt and move through change is important. Evolving compassion and patience to the individual, families and communities we serve is critical to becoming a professional.

Question

Differentiate between personal, societal, and professional roles. How can we balance the expectation of our own history, values, and beliefs with those of our new role as a professional BN? Provide two examples of when your personal and professional roles were at odds with one another.
