Due to the potential toxic stress of poverty, it's time to differentiate healthy and unhealthy ways that we as a society can cope with this crisis. The materials you reviewed discussed how adults in a child's life can buffer the effects of stress on a child. Therefore, this implies that we as a society can positively impact these outcomes if we apply healthy interventions.
For this Discussion post assignment, you are to engage with your peers and identify ways that we (as a society) can help buffer both the amount of chronic stress that children are exposed to AND the minimize the potential negative outcomes. There were a few methods discussed in the video and the reading. For this assignment, you're required to make two Discussions posts - first, discuss the problem of toxic stress for childhood development; and then second, respond to the post of one of your peers. In your back and forth discussion, address the following points:
1) Discuss the ways that toxic stress can affect the development of a child (from both the reading) and video.
2) Is stress always toxic? This question should be addressed with the information from the video and use the example of the family to support your response.
3) I want you to think about some additional ways your community or society might be able too help reduce the effects of toxic stress. Please discuss at least three ways you found interesting in the video/readings, or your own ideas, or additional researched ideas (i.e. may do an internet search) that society can help decrease the amount of chronic stress children in poverty may be exposed to.
