Coaching is task and performance driven, while mentoring is development driven and serves as a guide.

At my current employer we have always had a training department to train new and existing employees to do the various jobs within the organization. Last year, the company implemented a coaching department to ensure employees have the skills needed to perform their job successfully. Our mentoring program has been around for 5 years and allows employees volunteer to be a mentor or a mentee.
