Professional/personal development and clinical supervision

Models of Clinical Supervision - In this topic we are focusing on the various theoretical frameworks underpinning the application of clinical supervision in your practice setting. You will investigate the characteristics of these models, and use your understanding to reflect on your own experience of supervision. This will lead to a personal analysis of which model may best suit your needs, and identification of any charges you may wish to consider regarding your current supervision arrangements.

Activity - Contemporary Issues in Clinical Supervision

Purpose - This activity exposes you to a range of approaches to the implementation of clinical supervision in practice, in order for you to begin to critically examine your current experience of supervision. it will also lead you to an appraisal of available models, and prepare you to make modifications to your clinical supervision arrangements, should you wish to do so. There are 3 parts to this activity.

Part One - Philosophical & theoretical frameworks

In this first part of the activity, you will critically examine the history of philosophical and theoretical frameworks underpinning clinical supervision. Part of your analysis will be to link these frameworks to your current practice. You will review a series of documents provided below and interpret them in relation to your current experience as a clinical supervisor or supervisee.

Access the readings below which will provide you with some background on the history of philosophical and theoretical frameworks underpinning clinical supervision. Following the readings, please complete the challenge question that appears beneath the readings.

1. White and Winstanley (2009) describe the implementation of a model of clinical supervision in the Australian context.

2. Taylor and Harrison (2010) discuss the introduction of clinical supervision.

3 ACMHN Monograph (2002) While this document is now over a decade old, it provides a brief introduction to three models of supervision. Please read pages 5-7.

Challenge Question - Having read the three resources above, select three main models and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Part Two - Contemporary discussion

In Part Two of this activity, you will analyse contemporary discussion regarding models of clinical supervision and reflect on your own practice.

Access the following readings. While reading, consider either

A. Which of these models most closely resembles the style of supervision you are currently receiving.

OR

B. Which of these models you would be most likely to consider using as a provider of supervision.

1. Sloane and Watson 2002

2. Sadow et al (2008)

3. Mills and Chasler (2012)

Students of disciplines other than nursing should also search and critique the literature relevant to their discipline. Refer to the unit outline for additional resources.

Part Three - Approaches & implementation

In Part Three of this activity, you will differentiate theoretical approaches to clinical supervision in your specialised discipline and how these have influenced the implementation of supervision in a range of settings.

Review the notes you have made as a result of the activities in Part One and Part Two.

Answer the following question: What is the model of supervision that provides the best fit for your clinical practice, from the point of view of your specific discipline and work setting?

You may now wish to incorporate your thoughts from these 3 activities into a personal and professional development plan.

How you and your peers are supported within the organisation impacts on staff morale and workplace recruitment and retention, not to mention outcomes for consumers.

Do - For this activity you will be researching within your organisation, using interview techniques that you have designed. Your created questions will be aimed at discovering how various leaders in yotir organisation conduct leadership activities such as clinical supervision, mentoring and performance management:

1. Design a set of no more than 6 interview questions aimed at investigating the leadership activities.

2. Interview up to three individuals who you identify as leaders within your organisation. Ensure your interview subjects have given consent. If you are audio-recording you 'interview, this should take no longer than 3 minutes. If you are taking notes at interview, you should prepare approximately 100 words per response to each question.

3. Create a presentation to showcase your findings. This can be presented in any format; written, audio or video recording, digitally produced e.g. MS PowerPoint etc.

Identifying and working with a mentor provides you with a particular style of support. Choosing your mentor could well be one of the most influential decisions you could make in your practice.

- Who would you choose?

- What are the qualities you are looking for?

What is the relationship and how does it differ from clinical supervision?

The answers to all, these questions and more await you in this topic.

Activity - Why Mentor?

Using the leadership and support aspects identified in the previous activity, you will review the role of mentoring as a strategy for personal and professional development. This activity is divided into two parts.

Purpose - The following activities lead you to clearly and articulate your understanding of the difference between clinical supervision, mentoring and performance management.

Part One - What is mentoring?

Access the following readings. While you are reading, ask yourself which of the three strategies (1.clinical supervision, 2. mentoring, 3. performance management) are the most familiar to you. Consider if and how you use each of these strategies.

1. McLoughen et al. 2013

2 Pearce et al. 2013

Students of disciplines other than nursing should also search and critique the literature relevant to their discipline. Refer to the unit outline for additional resources.

Part Two - What style of mentoring is for me?

Do - Prepare a draft personal statement of philosophy related to your own professional support needs. Include in this philosophy the most relevant models which you believe would have a positive impact in your practice. Prepare this in a written document, and build on this draft as part of your portfolio for Assessment.

Using the draft personal statement of philosophy from the activity in this topic, you will now be able to develop a professional development plan in relation to clinical supervision to extend your personal growth and professional goals. A template for you to record this plan is include as a resource in this module.
