Below you will see four different arguments that lack a counterargument. You will also see different variations of audience. These variations should help you recognize which counterargument to focus on. For this assignment, pick one of the main arguments, and for that argument, respond to all of the different audiences. Keep this audience in mind in order to discredit this counterargument in the most effective way. Remember to bring up the counterargument your audience may be wondering about, recognize it as valid, and then, discredit it.
Argument One:
"Mom or Dad, I've been doing research for months, and I know exactly which computer is perfect for me. I'm hoping that you'll hear me out and that you'll buy me this new computer."
Discredit counterargument for: Parents who don't like spending money, parents who believe technology is a distraction, and parents who hate social media.
Argument Two: "If you don't get this homework done tonight, you're going to fail English for the marking period. You're my friend, and I'm looking out for your best interest here. Our teacher and your parents are going to be so disappointed in you if you don't get this assignment done... "
Discredit counterarguments for: Friend who thinks homework is too easy and a waste of time, Friend who thinks homework is too hard and frustrating, and a friend who would rather play video games.
Argument Three: "Hey! We're in the same science class, and I think you're really funny, and you seem like a very interesting person. I was hoping that you'd want to go out and see a movie with me on Friday night..."
Discredit counterarguments for: Person who doesn't know who you are, person who thinks you're a bad influence, and person who hates movies.
Argument Four: "I see you're admiring the newest car on this lot. It's a beauty, isn't it? Bright red, sleek, and incredibly fast. It comes with all the bells and whistles - heated steering wheel and leather seats, too. It can be yours today for only $50,000..."
Discredit counterarguments for: Person who is vegan and against leather seats, person who hates the color red, and a person who will be in debt if they buy the car.
