There is an amazing and diverse community of life that exists along side humans in our own neighbourhoods. We often don't see it, notice it, or recognize it while we go about our day to day activities and busy lives. This assignment challenges you to take notice of and document the community of life living here with us.  You can define your urban ecosystem; it can be large or small or tiny. You choose the habitat, location, and pay attention to what type of living things you find there besides people. Examples include the sidewalk that runs up the street you live on or the back patio or yard behind your home. It may be the beach, a canyon, or tide pools. You can go to Madrona Marsh and document who you see there.  You may choose any location to conduct this study.

Procedure

You will document at least 10 different types of living things that live together in the location you define.  They should include examples from the three kingdoms that we can see, are visible, Plants, Animals and fungi (if present). The bacteria and other microorganisms are certainly there but we can't see them so we can't include them in this project.

Every species in your list of the members of your community should include:

  1. The species name - scientific name and common name(s). In order to identify species, you can download the iNaturalist app on your phone. We will go over how to use it in lab.
  2. A photograph of the organism. If you can't get a photograph (for example, it can be hard to get a good photograph of birds), you can include a photograph of the species that you find online
  3. Where specifically was the organism found
  4. An interesting fact about the species
  5. Include any observations you made about the organism when you saw it. If it was an animal, what was it doing? If it was a plant, how would you describe its environment where it was growing? Was the species interacting with any other organisms?

Next, research the members of your community to determine the likely food web that exists within the community you've identified, and draw the food web that you determine best represents the interactions of your community on the last slide of your PowerPoint.

  1. Draw the food web that you think exists in your community.

What to hand in for today's lab:

  1. 10 Identified Species (#1-5 for each)
  2. Food Web
