Dymocks first bookstore was opened in Sydney by William Dymocks in 1879. The firm managed few bookstores in New South Wales till 1970's. In 1986 the bookstore chain was established as a franchise chain. and has since opened stores in every mainland Australian state. and also internationally in New Zealand and Sinaore.In 1999, Dymocks Booksellers entered into a joint venture with South China Morning Post (Holdings) to set up Dymocks Franchise Systems (China), in order to expand the Dymocks chain into Hong Kong. As at 2014. there are 12 stores in Hong Kong. As per change in customer preferences, it is predicted that online shopping would see the end of Australian bookstores. It was announced in January 2015 that Dymocks would close its Hong Kong office. The remainina stores are expected to operate independently using the Dymocks name before being rebranded individually. Dymocks management is now toyving with the idea of launching an online store in response to the increasing penetration into the Australian book market of online retailers such as Amazon.com
